Health tips- overcoming embarrassing mouth odour
Mouth odour can be very embarrassing. It can keep one’s friends away or even ruin relationships.
Bad breath is often caused by a build-up of bacteria in the mouth that causes inflammation and gives off noxious odours. When one does not brush or floss regularly bacteria accumulate on the bits of food left in the mouth and between the teeth, the compounds released by those bacteria makes the breathe smell.
Quick solutions to mouth odours include:
Scraping your tongue: scrape your tongue every morning with a tongue scraper or a spoon to decrease the bacteria, fungi and dead cells that can cause odour. Pull your tongue out in order to clean the back of the tongue.
Drink plenty water: Bacteria’s sworn enemy is oxygen which is found in one’s saliva. Drinking water makes one produce more saliva which in turn neutralizes bad breath.
Sugar-free gum: Again, it is all about saliva. Chewing gum increases the production of saliva and chewing just one piece makes your mouth create up to 10 times more saliva than usual. Sugar-free mints also stimulate saliva production and temporarily mask odour.
Rinse with mouthwash: There are various mouthwash products to use to also keep bad breath at bay.
Regular dental check-ups and cleaning: See a dentist regularly, at least twice a year, to be able to detect and treat periodontal disease, dry mouth or other problems that may cause mouth odour.
Eat vegetables: Crunchy vegetables help remove plaque on teeth and gums which bacteria can feed on, fibrous vegetables such as cucumbers, celery boost mouth’s saliva production which in turn washes away odour-causing bacteria.
Practice good oral hygiene: Use floss to remove food particles and plaque between teeth once a day, brush twice a day to remove food debris and plaque remember to brush your tongue. Replace your toothbrush every 2 – 3 months or after an illness.
No smoking: Smoking leads to dry mouth and a dry mouth is an oxygen- depleted mouth which gives bad bacteria a home to strive, cigarette smokers have high chances of experiencing oral infections.
